Floors: go with waterproof or water-resistant flooring. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and porcelain tile both stand up to moisture, but tile is cooler underfoot in summer and easier to mop. Avoid carpet — it’s a maintenance nightmare in laundry areas.

Cabinetry: choose finishes rated for humid spaces; solid-core or marine-grade plywood boxes with moisture-resistant laminates hold up better than cheap particleboard. Paint cabinet interiors with a mildew-resistant primer if you’re in an older home with higher humidity.

Storage and organization that speed the process

Think in zones: cleaning supplies, laundry sorting, folding, and long-term storage. A few ideas that deliver immediate value:

• Shallow upper cabinets or open shelving for frequently used detergents and stain treatments.
• Pull-out sorting hampers to pre-sort whites, colors, and delicates. These keep floors clear and speed loading.
• A folding counter at waist height (36") with cabinetry underneath for baskets.

• Task lighting: Under-cabinet LED strips above the counter improve visibility for stain treatment and folding.
• Sound control: Add insulation in walls and use anti-vibration pads under machines if noise is a concern.

A cosmetic refresh — paint, shelving, and new lighting — can be a few thousand dollars. A mid-range remodel with new appliances, cabinetry, counters, and flooring typically falls into the mid-five-figure range. Moving plumbing, installing a gas line, or relocating the laundry to a new floor are the most costly items because of labor and permitting.
