About This Project

Some kitchens are beautiful. Some kitchens work perfectly. And then, every once in a while, a project comes together where every single element feels inevitable, like the room was always supposed to look exactly this way. This Montana Drive kitchen and living room in Downingtown is that project. When the homeowners approached Craftsworth Construction, the vision was ambitious: transform a dated first floor into a cohesive, magazine-worthy space that could handle the chaos of real family life without sacrificing an ounce of design sophistication. The result is a two-tone kitchen with a natural white oak island, arabesque marble mosaic backsplash, custom wood-banded range hood, and a living room anchored by built-in shelving and a shiplap fireplace that together create one of the most stunning first-floor transformations Craftsworth has ever built.

The kitchen's personality begins with the two-tone cabinetry. Crisp white shaker cabinets with matte black bar-pull hardware line the perimeter walls, their clean lines and generous proportions establishing the room's modern farmhouse foundation. But the island tells a different story entirely. Its base cabinets are crafted from natural white oak with a light, honey-toned finish that brings organic warmth into every sightline. Deep drawers with oversized matte black pulls provide serious storage, while the contrast between the pale oak and the white perimeter cabinets gives the kitchen a layered, collected quality that single-tone kitchens simply cannot achieve. Above, a thick quartz countertop with delicate marble-like veining stretches across the island's generous surface, its polished finish reflecting the lantern pendants above and catching the natural light that pours through the adjacent windows.

Those lantern pendants deserve their own moment. A trio of black iron cage lanterns with clear glass panels hangs from delicate chains above the island, their geometric silhouettes creating bold visual interest overhead while casting warm, unobstructed light across the work surface below. The industrial edge of the wrought iron softens against the warm oak island base and the soft gray walls beyond, striking a balance between farmhouse charm and modern structure that defines the entire room's character. In the evening, when the recessed lighting dims and the pendants glow, the kitchen takes on an entirely different personality, intimate and warm, the kind of room where a glass of wine and good conversation feel like the only things on the agenda.

Behind the induction cooktop, the backsplash is a showstopper. An arabesque marble mosaic in soft whites, warm grays, and occasional hints of gold and taupe covers the wall from countertop to the underside of the upper cabinets, its diamond-shaped pattern catching the under-cabinet lighting at different angles throughout the day. The mosaic wraps the entire kitchen, running behind the sink, around the corner into the window alcove, and along the full perimeter, creating uninterrupted visual flow that makes the room feel larger and more unified than its footprint suggests. This is not a budget backsplash, and it shows. The natural stone has depth and movement that ceramic tile simply cannot replicate, and the installation is flawless, with every piece precisely aligned to create a seamless field of texture.

The custom range hood anchors the cooking wall with quiet authority. A white painted body with clean crown molding detail at the top transitions to a natural wood band at its base, the warm oak tone perfectly matching the island cabinetry across the room. This single design decision ties the two-tone concept together beautifully, connecting the perimeter white to the island's natural wood in one sculptural element. Beneath the hood, a flush-mounted induction cooktop sits level with the surrounding quartz countertop, its glass surface keeping the lines clean and the cooking zone sleek. Flanking the hood, stacked white shaker cabinets with illuminated transom windows at the top reach toward the ceiling, maximizing storage while the small frosted panes above add an architectural detail that lifts the eye.

The sink zone is pure function wrapped in beauty. Centered below a large window that fills the corner with natural light, an undermount stainless steel sink pairs with a matte black gooseneck faucet that provides both reach and style. The arabesque backsplash extends up and around the window, wrapping the entire alcove in that same warm marble mosaic. Cutting boards lean artfully against the backsplash, a white orchid catches the light on the windowsill, and a woven basket tray holds everyday essentials within arm's reach. It's the kind of sink area that makes washing dishes feel less like a chore and more like a moment to enjoy the view through the trees outside.

The stainless steel appliance package is built for performance. A French-door refrigerator anchors one end of the kitchen, its professional finish complementing the wall ovens that sit stacked in a tall white cabinet tower near the dining area. The induction cooktop provides precise, instant heat control without the visual bulk of a traditional range, keeping the countertop lines continuous and clean. Every appliance sits flush with the surrounding cabinetry, integrated rather than inserted, which gives the entire kitchen a custom, built-in quality that elevates the space beyond a typical remodel.

Beyond the kitchen, the living room completes the first-floor transformation. Built-in shelving flanks a large television wall, each shelf illuminated with warm LED accent lighting that turns everyday books, plants, and family photos into a curated display. The shelving units feature a mix of open display shelves and closed cabinets below, with the same white paint and clean shaker detailing that connects them visually to the kitchen cabinetry. At the far end, a shiplap-clad fireplace surround rises from a traditional mantel, its horizontal wood planks painted white and topped with a preserved eucalyptus wreath that adds a touch of organic texture. Flanking windows fill the space with natural light and frame views of mature trees, while a plush sectional and swivel chair create a comfortable seating arrangement that faces both the fireplace and the television.

The foyer and staircase received equal attention. Stained oak treads with crisp white painted risers climb through a two-story entry, the warm wood tones echoing the kitchen island and the oak handrails that cap the white-painted balusters. A large round black-framed mirror anchors the entry console area, while decorative black vases with white flowers and a carved wood welcome sign create an arrival moment that sets the tone for the entire home. From the second-floor landing, looking down through the open stairwell, the refinished hardwood floors stretch in every direction, connecting the foyer to the kitchen to the living room in one continuous, flowing first floor.

Craftsworth Construction built this Montana Drive home to be the kind of space that stops people in their tracks when they walk through the front door. The two-tone cabinetry, the arabesque marble, the custom wood-banded hood, the lantern pendants, the built-in shelving, the shiplap fireplace, the refinished staircase: every element was chosen with intention, executed with precision, and designed to work together as a whole. It's not just a kitchen remodel. It's a complete reimagining of how a family lives on the first floor of their home, and every detail proves that beautiful design and real-world function are never mutually exclusive.
